"Analytical psychology coincided in a most curious way with alchemy. The experiences of the alchemists were, in a sense, my experiences, and their world was my world ... I had stumbled upon the historical counterpart of my psychology of the unconscious. The possibility of a comparison with alchemy, and the uninterrupted intellectual chain back to gnosticism, gave substance to my psychology." (MDR 231)
In alchemy, there is the symbolic representation of inner experiences, aiming at psychic wholeness. A considerable part was concerned not with pseudo- or proto-chemistry, but with the projection of psychic images into the chemical process. In their meditation, the alchemists found a redemption, and the incorruptible lapis, the philosophers' stone, was the symbol of the archetype of the redeemer.
