The complex that constitutes the centre of the field of consciousness. It is a content as well as a condition of consciousness. The ego is not identical with the totality of the psyche. As well as being built up through sense impressions in contact with objective reality it relates to the unconscious and hence to the self as the totality of the individual and collective psyche.
It is a function of the consciousness that forms a bridge between the world around and the inner unconscious on an individual and collective level and is the organ through which the inner and outer become integrated in an individuated conscious personality.
